This bottle commemorates Maine’s original flag from 1901-1909. The pine tree represented Maine’s state tree, and the star represented the North Star, which symbolizes the state motto, Dirigo, meaning “I direct”

The 1901 flag was replaced in 1909 with the current blue flag featuring the state seal. The 1901 flag has seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years. In 2023, a legislative act was passed to replace the current flag with an updated version of the 1901 flag, subject to voter approval. The referendum will take place on November 5, 2024.
